But if God could have saved us more easily than he did, then God is not wise to have taken the more difficult course. Boso argues that no human who does with great difficulty what could have been done with ease is considered wise (against 7, ultimately). One might object that there is a very obvious case when a human might choose to do with difficulty something that could have been done easily: when one wishes to show by the very difficulty of the task how much one loves another person. Even in Anselm’s day, literature was full of such examples: Lancelot could give Guinevere a flower, but he demonstrates the depth of his love more fully if he gives her a flower that he has retrieved from some dangerous place at great difficulty and with peril to his life. Boso considers this possibility but replies that this claim is not defensible because God is able to show God’s great love to the unfallen angels without such theatrics.
